Organic coffees are typically understood as those grown without the use of pesticides or herbicides. Rather, organic coffees are limited to chemicals that are approved for organic use. Similar to shade grown coffees, organic, while producing a smaller yield, will generally be richer in natural flavors. Likewise, by avoiding harsh, unnatural chemicals, organic coffees are environmentally friendly and safer for the farming communities.
Unfortunately, not all coffees that come from organic origins are labeled organic. To be labeled organic in the U.S. requires a s somewhat tedious and expensive process that is not feasible for some farms. Many Ethiopian coffees, like the Moka Harrar present in our House Blend, are grown organically by tradition, but don’t carry the organic logo.
Whether certified or not, Shade Tree Coffee is committed to supporting farmers in implementing practices that improve the coffee product as well as their communities.
