Cooking up a Storm for the Scleroderma Foundation in Honor of Michelle Mayer

May 7th, 2008

Saturday, June 14, 2008 7-9 pm, $30 per person

Menu: Crepe Tasting with wine, Italian sodas and drip coffee

Join us for an evening of food and fellowship as we honor our friend Michelle Mayer and raise awareness about her disease, Scleroderma. All donations are welcome and go directly to the Scleroderma Foundation. Feel free to stop by and stay for as long or as little as you like.

Scleroderma is typically described as a rheumatic disease of the connective tissues. It is a chronic, degenerative disorder accompanied by widespread vascular deterioration and tissue loss. Scleroderma can be disfiguring, debilitating, and deadly.

Please indicate in the “message to friend” section if you plan on attending the event, so we can plan accordingly. Space at the event is limited to 50 people.

Please bring a poem (either by a favorite author or your own work) to share with Michelle. We will post them around the cafe and send them home with Michelle at the end of the evening.

Donations through this site are simple, fast and secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a contribution to our fundraising efforts and RSVP to the June 14th event. All donations are secure and sent directly to the Scleroderma Foundation.

Many thanks for your support — and don’t forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate or attend.

The Ethiopia Yirgacheffe from the Koke region is turning heads..

August 10th, 2007

We cupped more of this beautiful coffee today at Counter Culture and its muti-facited personality is keeping me on my toes. I managed to identify the coffee today in a blind cupping mainly because I’ve not been able to put it down! Wonderful acidity, clean finish to the point of being refreshing even hot… from berries to honey suckle to subtle citrusy notes, each time I taste the Koke, I have a slightly different experience. I’d recomend a French press, although the filtered drip has been just dandy on these hot past few days…Enjoy! Greg

Durham Ride for Rwanda – Saturday, September 8th, 2007

On Saturday, September 8th, a community of like-minded Durham businesses will host a truly special event that will benefit a cause very close to our hearts. I’m pleased to announce that Shade Tree Coffee is a co-sponsor of a bicycle scavenger hunt around the city of Durham designed to raise funds for, and awareness of, Bikes to Rwanda, an organization with the mission to provide much-needed cargo bicycles to co-operative coffee farmers in Rwanda. The organization also works toward improving the quality of life in these coffee-growing communities through a bicycle workshop and maintenance program that not only provides transportation resources for basic needs but also enhances the production of quality coffee.

Registration for the event begins at noon, and the scavenger hunt begins at 1 pm at event co-sponsor Shade Tree Coffee, which is also great place for coffee or espresso before, after, and during the event!

In solidarity with our partners in Rwanda, the event takes place on the same day as the Rwandan Wooden Bike Classic. At each stop on the hunt, participants will complete fun challenges such as riding a wooden bike; competing in a coffee sack race; enjoying a delicious popsicle; drinking a shot of single-origin Rwandan espresso; and more! At the end of the hunt, those who have completed all the challenges and make it back to Shade Tree will be entered in a drawing for prizes.

The event is sure to be a lot of fun for the whole family, and even if you don’t have or ride a bicycle, we encourage you to still come out and join the festivities. For those of you who do plan to ride, please remember your helmets!

Best,
Mark

Following in the same discriminating manner with which we produce our Golden Cup Award winning coffee, our wine collection features distinct wines from around the world worthy enough to stand up on their own, or accompanied with something special from our food menu. We are also fortunate to be able to offer several varieties of beer brewed locally by Carolina Brewery. While our selections will be rotating from time to time, our commitment to quality won’t. For more information on our current selections see our online wine and beer menu.
